The scope: A permanent exhibit in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, The Hall of Human Origins takes visitors through the evolution and expansion of the Homo sapien species with a series of sculptures, artifacts, scenic cave-work, art reproduction, and glass models.

What were the problems: Properly placing all thematic elements into a pre-existing government building. Following strict health and installation guidelines. Ensuring that every element was historically accurate and created with the highest quality of structural integrity while being installed 800 miles from the production facility.

My Answer: I began with research of earthen textures and structural fabrication processes while analyzing the existing museum space for proper installation of thematic elements. When the research and fabrication drawings were completed, I worked directly with fabricators and artists to create a life size cave with reproduced cave paintings, five relief sculptures illustrating what makes humanity unique, two concrete ground forms of key geographic areas in the history of homo sapiens, and six glass viruses used to illustrate the effect humanity has had on the world.

The scope: To produce historically accurate facades and artifacts that properly illustrate the history of West Virginia at the West Virginian Cultural center.

What were the problems: Producing historically accurate replicas, while maintaining a beautiful and rustic aesthetic.

My Answer: This project necessitated perfect reproduction of historical thematic elements. Using reference pictures and measurements from historical artifacts, I produced drawings that illustrated how the elements would be built using present day fabrication, aging, and installation methods.

The scope: To produce the ride facades and signage for the new Sesame Steet children’s section at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg.

What were the problems: Coordinating production and design with the varying contractors, architects, and park officials.

My Answer: For this project I was responsible for taking the initial “blue sky” designs and making them fit the existing buildings and ride structures. I developed fabrication and attachment methods for thematic elements while communicating with the designer when existing conditions necessitated change in design. What resulted from this interaction was the use of structural limits to enhance the beauty and fun of the designs while creating a superior vision merging concept and reality.
